Where the story breaks
He raises the rent payment himself — "my rent getting paid the next day wasn't a motive" — before the interrogator has accused him of anything.
How to run this interrogation
The suspect here is more careful than Marcus but makes the same category of mistake: he defends things nobody has accused him of yet. The ski mask gets an explanation before you ask about it, and so does the money — a story about selling his late father’s power tools to a neighbour named Dave.
The giveaway is the rent. He says his rent being paid the next day “wasn’t a motive” before the interrogation has raised motive at all. Someone who has not thought about how the timing looks does not pre-emptively defend it. Build the timeline first — his drifts badly, moving from driving to a friend’s house, to being home by midnight, to a 10 p.m. phone call — then close on the money.
