The case
The murder of Sarah Jenkins. Marcus was found near the scene and claims he left before it happened.
What the suspect will tell you
Lines observed in recorded playthroughs. Wording varies between runs — the deflection pattern does not.
- "The bartender at Sarah's Bar can vouch for my leaving time."
- Blames a wrong timestamp on a long shift: "I'm a construction worker, not a clock."
- "I've got a bunch of co-workers who use the same type of hammer. It's a pretty common tool in the trade."
Where the story breaks
His stated leaving time does not line up with the camera timestamp — the gap between 9:30 and 9:45 is the pressure point, not the hammer itself.
How to run this interrogation
Case 1 is the game teaching you its own rule. Marcus is not a careful liar: he volunteers a leaving time in his first answer, and the case file already tells you a camera puts him there later. Spend your opening questions letting him describe the evening in his own words, then put the timestamp against the time he gave you.
The trap is the hammer. It is the most incriminating object in the file, so it is tempting to lead with it — and it is exactly the subject Marcus is most comfortable discussing, because “half my crew owns one” is a genuinely reasonable answer. Every question spent on the hammer is a question he wins. The fifteen minutes between 9:30 and 9:45 has no reasonable answer, which is why that is where he breaks.
Why this case stops people
Almost nobody. Case 1 is the widest funnel in the game — over half a million players hold the badge — and the contradiction is handed to you in the first two answers.
The confession
“I didn't mean to. We got into an argument. I hit her with the hammer. … Yes, I did it. I'm sorry.”
